Why install a rainwater harvesting system?

  • Do your bit for the planet: Apart from the recurring heatwaves in our summers when water is in desperately short supply, rainwater harvesting helps to preserve freshwater resources by reducing demand on traditional sources, while helping to prevent soil erosion. By reusing rainwater for watering your plants and other needs, you are helping to preserve this precious resource. By reducing your consumption of pure water, you're doing your bit for the planet.
  • Save money for your wallet: By replacing some of your drinking water with rainwater, you can save money on your annual water bill. You'll no longer need to use tap water to water your garden, flush your toilet, wash your car, and so on: Almost 50% of the water we use does not need to be drinkable.

How do you choose a rainwater harvesting system?

When choosing a rainwater harvesting system, the storage volume and the intended uses are essential aspects to take into account.

Which uses?

If you opt for outdoor use:

- Watering your garden, vegetable patch, plants, lawn, etc.

- Washing your car

- Cleaning the terrace, floor and other outdoor surfaces

And if you choose domestic use:

- Flush toilets

- Washing clothes (provided you use a suitable treatment system)

- Filling your swimming pool (subject to specific treatment)

Which volume to choose?

We offer 3 rectangular tank volumes: 300, 600 and 1000 litres. Defining the volume of your tank according to your water storage needs is imperative.

Before making your choice, you need to take a number of factors into account:

- Your intended uses (see above)

- Your requirements in litres

- The space available

- The surface area of your garden in m2

- The frequency of rainfall in your region

If you wish, you can even connect skimmers to each other to benefit from larger volumes. Take a look at our wide range of accessories.

Can I drink or cook with harvested rainwater?

No, we advise against drinking or cooking with rainwater. This is because it can be chemically contaminated if it runs off a contaminated surface. However, you can eat the produce grown in your vegetable garden if you water it using your recovery system.

Above-ground or underground tank: what's the difference?

An underground tank is below ground, which makes it more discreet and frees up space in the garden. However, its installation may require more extensive work (such as a pump or overflow system) and more difficult access for maintenance. It has a large storage capacity and is recommended for large volumes (from 3000 litres). Note: there is no risk of frost with this type of tank.

An above-ground tank, on the other hand, is installed above ground, usually in a garden or property, and is therefore easily accessible for maintenance and use. A simple connection and the water is accessible! It is more visible than a buried tank, but requires less installation work and can easily be hidden by wooden boxes or a hedge. However, this type of collector has a smaller storage capacity.

The choice will depend on your aesthetic preferences, the space available, the desired level of discretion, ease of installation and access for maintenance. Whether you opt for an overhead model or a cistern, make sure you choose a product that meets your rainwater collection and storage needs.

The advantages of an IBC for collecting rainwater

An IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) takes the form of a rectangular polyethylene cube surrounded by a galvanised steel cage. They have a storage volume of up to 1000 litres, or 1 cubic metre of water. They offer a number of advantages for rainwater harvesting:

- Large storage capacity (1000 litres)

- Easy collection (under a roof or via a gutter system)

- Effective protection against contaminants

- Easy distribution (thanks to integrated valves and taps)

- Network connection to multiply volume

Can I get financial help to buy a rainwater harvesting tank?

Installing a rainwater harvesting system can be expensive. Fortunately, some local authorities offer grants towards the purchase of the necessary equipment. To take advantage of these, we recommend that you contact your local council or prefecture directly.

What equipment is needed to collect rainwater?

A water tank alone is not an effective solution for collecting rainwater. Fortunately, we have a number of very practical accessories (filters, connectors, etc.) to make your life easier:

- Gutter collector kit

- Adapters

- Downpipe

- Filter - Tap

- Fitting

- Level indicator

- 2-circuit outlet kit

Do I have to register my rainwater harvesting system?

Yes, it is compulsory to make a declaration of use to your local council if your equipment is connected to the public sewerage system. Your declaration should be made on plain paper and should include the following information: - Identification of the building concerned - Assessment of the volumes of water used inside your home It must then be submitted or sent to the town hall to the department responsible for sewerage. For more details, see the following link: https://www.service-public.fr/particuliers/vosdroits/F31481.

Regulations you need to know before installing a rainwater harvesting system

Here are the key points to bear in mind:

- Make sure that no tap outlet is installed in a room where a clean water outlet is already present.

- Under no circumstances should drinking water and rainwater systems be connected to each other.

- All taps supplying rainwater must be clearly labelled as ‘Non-drinking water’, accompanied by an appropriate pictogram.

- Consumption for food purposes is prohibited.

Don't hesitate to check with your local authority (the town hall) to find out about the specific regulations in force in your area. Sometimes you need a permit or authorisation to install water harvesters.

Maintenance tips

Regular maintenance is essential to keep your tanks in good working order. If you use rainwater inside your home, it is essential to maintain your equipment according to the following schedule:

- Every 6 months, check your network equipment: cleanliness, connections, etc.

- Every year, carry out a thorough cleaning, including filters, tank, disinfection if necessary and emptying if necessary. You should also take the opportunity to check the condition of the outlet valves and taps.

- You should also keep an up-to-date sanitation maintenance log.

Note: You can call in a specialist to help you maintain your tanks if necessary.
